Door Glass and Vent Removal

While I was waiting on the new windshield rubber I decided to work on the door some more to prepare it for the new channels and whisker strips. I removed the glass and the vent window. Then I removed the old channel and strips.

Over all this was an easy job once you find the screws that need to be removed. First you will have to remove the door knobs and handles and the inner reveal or trim. Then remove the access panels if your car still has them. Mine did not but I will probably make new ones. There are a few screws along the top of the door above the vent area that come out. Then a nut at the bottom of the divider bar on the inner door panel. You can easily spot that one as it should have threads with a slotted end for a screw driver poking out. I tried to screw mine in for more clearance to remove the bar but it would not budge. It was easy enough to just push it clear of the door panel.

I then pulled the top channel the window seats in when up out of the way and tilted the entire center bar towards the back of the car then up and out. Once the tension adjustment nut, under the vent glass pivot, clears you should be home free. If you just want to remove the center divider at some point, there is a screw behind the channel that attaches it to the vent frame that will have to be accessed and removed.

Then, with the window in the down position, check the access panels to be sure you can see the bracket holding the glass. There will be 4 screws (2 on each end) you will need to remove. This will allow the window to be lifted out. Gently squeeze and remove the 3 clips along the inside top edge of the door, that secured the bottom of the surround trim, to allow you to tilt the window further out when removing it. Lift the glass to the top and tilt it out towards the inside of the car. Then work one corner at a time out of the door being careful not to damage the glass. You may want to pile a towel or other soft material in the bottom in case you drop the glass while trying to maneuver it up and out.

Mine had a flat rubber like flap on the back side bottom of the glass that fell off before I even attempted to remove the glass. I will try and figure out where it was attached and how. IO suspect it was either a dust shield or there to channel water.

The bottom area takes whisker strips. One on each side of the glass. Although the original outside strip was narrow, you will use the same strips that go on the inside. Thanks ChevyTalk and member 50sChevys

The strips are easy to remove. The inner comes off with the surround trim and is stapled onto the trim. The outer has a small screw on each end you take off then a series of clips that come out and down to release it. The channel section has larger clips that just slide off for the most part.

I expect the windshield rubber and the whisker strips tomorrow so I should get something done if they come soon enough. In the meantime I will probably start on the rear drivers side glass dis assembly. I will still need the vent window rubber seal that is still on back order. The last thing to come will be the wiper tower gaskets and a replacement glove compartment light assembly.  The one I have has the push button worn down so that the door will not shut off the light when closed. I had a magnet stuck in there to make up the difference.
